A fire broke out at the under-construction Sabarmati bullet train station in Ahmedabad during welding. All workers were evacuated safely; investigations into the cause are ongoing.

AHMEDABAD: An under-construction bullet train station in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, caught fire early on Saturday morning as a result of welding activities. The fire had started at 6:30 AM when workers were doing roof shuttering. All the personnel present on the site were evacuated without any reported injuries or casualties.

The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services immediately responded with 14 fire tenders at the site. In the initial stage, the fire-fighting teams were assisted by teams from the Sabarmati and Chandkheda fire stations. Additional help was also drawn from Sahpur, Navrangpura, Maninagar, and Jamalpur to contain the fire.

According to the AFES, welding sparks fell onto the wooden sheets, which were used during the construction process, to ignite the fire. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has confirmed the incident. "The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but prima facie, it appears that welding sparks from temporary shuttering work may have triggered it," reads the statement by NHSRCL. There is a team from NHSRCL present on site who are monitoring the situation and safety measures adopted.

The accident also draws the relevance of safety measures while involving in construction work activities, especially with flammable materials. Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are still ongoing.
