Dibrugarh, January 20: Former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) assistant general secretary, Bipul Das, who was also actively associated with the six-years long Assam Agitation, on Tuesday officially joined the Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) along with a number of his followers at a function held here at Amolapatty tya Mandir.
The former AASU leader Bipul Das along with retired college teacher Sahera Khatun, former AASU leaders Dharjya Gogoi , Biswajit Das, Prasanta Sarmah and Mahavir Saheb, were welcomed into the regiol party at a ceremony chaired by AGP central committee leader, Dr. Kamini Ranjan Baruah.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, the local AGP secretary Dipom Baruah stated that the regiol party would be re-energized following joining of new leaders like Das. Hinting at the probable candidature of Bipul Das for the Dibrugarh LAC seat, he said it would help the regiol party to put up a good fight against the Congress, as the former Dibrugarh Municipal chairman Chandra Kanta Baruah is expected to be fielded as the ruling party’s candidate.
Moreover, the expected return of BJP has been ruled out by the local populace if the party fields the incumbent BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan, who in recent times has been stuck into some alleged corruption-related hullabaloo causing resentment among the local populace.
