AMRITSAR: Sukhbir Singh Badal, the head of the Shiromani Akali Dal, narrowly avoided being assassinated on Wednesday when a former Khalistani terrorist opened fire on Punjab's former deputy chief minister at the Golden Temple's gate, but was subdued by plainclothes police officers.
Media professionals who had gathered to cover the second day of Badal carrying out the religious penance of "sewadar" at the main gate of the Sikh shrine as a result of "mistakes" made by the SAD government in Punjab between 2007 and 2017 were able to record the daring attack, which took place at approximately 9:30 am.
The shooter, described as former terrorist Narain Singh Chaura, approached Badal (62), a Z+ protectee who was seated in a wheelchair because of a shattered leg, slowly as other devotees were arriving. He then took a revolver out of his pocket.
On Tuesday, Chaura, 68, was also spotted at the temple. Sensing the threat to the senior Akali leader, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jasbir Singh, who was standing nearby in plainclothes, leaped on the shooter, grabbed his hands, and pushed them upward. With the assistance of other security guards and members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) task force, the assailant was eventually overpowered.
Sukhbir Badal was unharmed when the gun went off during the altercation and the bullet struck the shrine's entry wall behind him.
