Goa Liberation Day is celebrated every year on 19 December marking the victory of 'Operation Vijay' operated by the Indian Armed Forces that gave independence to the Indian state, Goa which was under 451 years of Portuguese rule.

This year the day is observed across India on Sunday 19 December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday 19 December facilitated the freedom fighters and veterans in a function organized at Shyama Prasad Mukherji Stadium, Panaji in observance of the Goa Liberation Day.


It is a day to celebrate the success of the Indian Army that annexed Portuguese rule from the state of Goa. The day is also important as the country got complete freedom from the rule of European on this day of 19 December. To honour the coastal and smallest state of the country, the day is celebrated by holding various ceremonies in different parts of India.

The day is celebrated by the nation to pay attention to the immense success of Goa in the sector of tourism and for being the state with the highest per capita income among all the Indian UTs and States.


The state of Goa was under the rule of the Portuguese for 14 years after the independence of the country in 1947. Getting inspiration and confidence with India's freedom from British rule numerous agitations was carried out for Goa's liberation and the country made a peaceful attempt through diplomatic challenges so that Goa gets liberated.

The Portuguese finally surrendered when the Prime Minister of the Country at that time, Jawaharlal Nehru sent armed forces and with this Goa got independence on 19 December 1961. It became the Union Territory of India with its liberation and remained UT till the year 1987 and then it was provided state-hood becoming the 25th state of the country.
