Govt extends work from home facility for IT sector till end of 2020

Guwahati: Bringing happy news to the entire IT sector, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Tuesday extended the work from home facility till December 31, 2020. The department's move was heartily welcomed by the leaders of the Indian IT sector.

Earlier, the government had extended the relaxation in terms and conditions this till the end of July. As the facility has been extended once again, the employees can continue to enjoy the work from home facility till the end of this year.

Leaders of many IT companies and associations welcomed the move and expressed their gratitude to the government. The apex governing body of the IT sector, NASSCOM's President Debjani Ghosh posted a tweet thanking Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and the DoT secretary.

Rishad Premji, Chairman of Wipro wrote on Twitter, "Thank you to the government for their tremendous support on new ways of working from day1. This has helped tremendously in further elevating our standing and responsiveness globally.

Although the six months' extension has brought partial satisfaction to the industry, the IT industry had sought permanent relaxations in these norms. Most companies are planning to adopt a blended model of working where a percentage of employees will permanently work from home. TCS, India's largest IT company had already said that they wish to have only 25% of their workforce in the offices by 2025. Interestingly, almost 90% of the employees working in India's top IT companies continue to work remotely.
