Govt issues warning over phishing attack

The Government of India has issued a warning over a "massive" phishing attack campaign on Sunday, June 21.

The centre has asked the people to safeguard their personal data and financial information .

The massive cyber attack is expected to start today by 'malicious actors' that could mimic official communication on the coronavirus pandemic to steal personal data and financial information from people.

The cyber security agency said the campaign is likely to create spoofed email IDs mimicking various authorities, which will then be used to dupe Indian individuals and businesses.

The government's cybersecurity agency Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in its advisory report stated" The phishing campaign is expected to use malicious emails under the pretext of local authorities in charge of dispensing government-funded COVID-19 support initiatives. Such emails are designed to drive recipients towards fake websites where they are deceived into downloading malicious files or entering personal and financial information,"

It is to be noted that the cyber security agency has asked people to not open attachments in unsolicited emails, even if they come from people in their contacts list.
