Heavy downpour compels BMC to declare holiday for government and private schools on July 2nd

Mumbai: After Mumbai experiences heavy downpour for the fifth consecutive day, the situation in the city can well be imagined. With many of its areas going underwater and the road and transportation system heavily affected, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken to announce a holiday for all government and private schools on July 2.

As per the reports of the Regional Meteorological Centre the rainfall in the city exceeded in the last 48 hours. The 550mm average of rainfall of the entire month of June was exceeded during the last few days’ rainfalls.

In keeping with the situation of emergency arising in the Mumbai city, the BMC has given some emergency helpline numbers so that the needy can get helped immediately:

The situation in the Mumbai city at present is not much convenient as the roads and railway lines are waterlogged creating further disruption for the daily commuters and traders. This has also been stated by the official government spokesperson that nothing will be operating in the city during these days apart from the emergency services.

The people of the city, especially of the waterlogged areas, are advised by the authority to stay inside their houses as there are further forecasts of heavy rainfall by the Indian Meteorological Department.

Reportedly, the main airport runways at Mumbai are forced to remain closed due to the bad weather. There was a serious issue of a SpiceJet flight overshot its mark while landing due to the heavy rainfall that took place at around 11.45 pm on Monday. Even on Tuesday morning as well, the Boeing 737-800 if forced to remain stuck at the end of the runway.

Further reports are that 54 flights have been diverted to other airports like Goa, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
