Guwahati: In a shocking development, a man from Himachal Pradesh sold his cow to purchase a mobile phone so that his two children so that they could get access to online classes necessitated due to the COVID-19 crisis. The cow was the sole source of his income.

The man named Kuldip Kumar belongs to Gummer village in Jwalamukhi. His children, Annu and Dippu, were studying in Class IV and Class II could not continue their studies since the classes shifted online and they did not have smartphones.

It has been reported that for a month, Kuldip moved from pillar to post to get a loan of Rs 6,000 to buy a smartphone. Later, he approached banks as well as private lenders but, because of his poor financial condition, no one was willing to help. At the same time, he was told by the teachers that if he wanted his children to continue their studies, he needed to buy a smartphone.

It is to be mentioned that Kuldip lives in a mud house. He neither has a below poverty line (BPL) card nor does is he a beneficiary of the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP).

Kuldip asserted that he had given a number of applications to the panchayat for financial assistance for the construction of the house and inclusion of his name in the IRDP, BPL, and Antodaya, but all in vain.

Meanwhile, Ramesh Dhawala, MLA from Jwalamukhi, said it was shocking for him that a man had to sell his cow to buy a phone for the sake of online studies of his children. He stated that he had directed the BDO and the SDM to provide him financial help immediately.
