In the Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh, a 40-year-old lady was killed by a crocodile on Friday morning when she was sitting on the side of a river, according to an official.

Locals claim that on the first day of the holy month of Sawan, victim Malti Bai went to wash in the river at Kaniyaghat Patti hamlet.
A crocodile attacked Malti as she was sitting by the river and dragged her into the water, according to Area Sub-Divisional Magistrate R L Bagri.
The locals made an unsuccessful attempt to save her. The woman was later freed from the crocodile's jaws during a rescue effort that was initiated by the State Disaster Response Force and the forest department, he said.

 According to the official, an SDRF crew subsequently retrieved the woman's body from the river, around 40 kilometers away from the district headquarters.
He said that following the post-mortem, the body would be given to Malti's family.
According to the locals, the forest department have placed hoardings close to the body of water to warn the locals not to go into the river because of the sharp increase in crocodile populations.
