NEW DELHI: India and Japan are planning to launch the Shinkansen E10 bullet train, also called Alfa-X, by 2029-30. Initially, India was going to use the Shinkansen E5, which has a top speed of 320 km/h, but now it will use the faster E10, which can reach 400 km/h. This is a big leap in train technology.
The E10 will be launched at the same time in both countries. In India, it will be part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, reducing travel time between the two cities to just over two hours.
This project demonstrates strong connection between India and Japan, with Japan providing a 50-year loan at a very low interest rate of 0.1%. Japan is also helping to make the E10 more suitable for India by adding extra luggage space and improving its ability to handle severe temperatures and dust.
In addition to the Shinkansen, India is also building two semi-high-speed trains with help from the Integral Coach Factory and BEML Ltd. These trains will reach speeds of up to 280 km/h and should be ready by 2026, showing India's progress in rail technology.
The Indian Railway Ministry is working on the infrastructure for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, including a 21-km undersea tunnel and several viaducts. Although there were some delays, most contracts have been awarded, and land acquisition is nearly complete.
The project is expected to be finished by 2028-30 and will transform travel in India, helping to meet the goals of the National Rail Plan 2030 and creating a modern rail system.
