New Delhi: Bangladesh is in negotiations to buy tanks from Turkey amid escalating tensions with India. This news surfaced when the country recently deployed Turkish-made drones along the Indian border.
The Bay of Bengal lies to the south of Bangladesh, with India bordering the country on all sides—north, east, and west. Its shared border with Myanmar is 270 kilometres long. According to reports, Bangladesh intends to station the tanks along the borders it shares with Myanmar and India.
Bangladesh has reportedly started negotiations to buy 26 light tanks for its armoured corps from the Turkish business Otokar Otomotiv Ve Savunma Sanayi A.S. According to sources, Bangladesh is receiving assistance from the Turkish government throughout the bidding process. Otokar manufactures a variety of tanks, such as the Altay, a well-known variant in the Turkish Army that weighs about 65 tonnes.
Given Bangladesh's mostly flat and terrain-heavy topography, altay tanks are too heavy for the country. Bangladesh might, however, consider acquiring Arma tanks, which are more appropriate for the terrain of the nation and weigh about 19 tonnes.
Recently, Turkey sold arms to Pakistan, and as a Muslim-majority country, Bangladesh appears to be strengthening its military connections with Turkey by purchasing tanks.
