India to build animal overpasses to give them a safe passage

New Delhi: After foot-over-bridges and subways for humans now India is going to build over- passes or bridges for animals. The first-ever animal overpass will come up at the under-construction Delhi-Mumbai greenfield expressway so that animals of Ranthambhore and Mukundra (Darrah) wildlife sanctuaries in Rajasthan are not disturbed. They can have a safe passage.

According to the Times of India report, these corridors will be on the lines of "animal bridges/ecoducts" in the Netherlands.

The plan reportedly has been approved by the Rajasthan government and the proposal is now with the Central Wildlife Board. Meanwhile, The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already assigned the work to an infrastructure firm and the agreement is expected to be signed next week.

The Delhi-Mumbai expressway will have five such animal overpasses, natural-looking structures, with a combined length of over 2.5 km. Each overpass would be built at a distance of 500 metres and these overpasses would be green, complete with trees and foliage so that the wild animals do not feel alienated.

This could definitely come in handy for Assam and Northeast where a large number of wild animals, particularly elephants are killed in road or rail accidents. The overpasses could also reduce the man-animal conflicts seen so frequently across the nation.
