TAWANG: Havildar Leki Passang of the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps has been honored with the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak for his extraordinary bravery and selfless service. The esteemed award was presented to him on Republic Day.

Havildar Passang displayed remarkable courage on January 28, 2023, near Shungetsar Lake in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, when a six-year-old child fell into an unsecured part of the ice-covered lake. Without hesitation, he crawled 30 meters over the fragile ice to rescue the child, risking his own safety in the process.

Havildar Leki Passang's quick thinking and fearless actions were instrumental in saving the child's life. His steadfast commitment to duty and humanity serves as an inspiration to all. This prestigious award is a well-deserved recognition of his selfless bravery and exceptional service.

Havildar Passang’s honor underscores the Indian Army’s dedication to acts of bravery and service that go above and beyond the call of duty.

The Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak is a civilian award conferred by the Government of India to recognize acts of courage and selfless service. It is awarded in three categories: Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and Jeevan Raksha Padak.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has approved the conferment of the Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards for 2024 to 49 deserving individuals. The awards are given to 17 people for the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, 9 people for the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and 23 people for the Jeevan Raksha Padak. Each award includes a medal, a certificate signed by the Union Home Minister, and a cash prize.
