GUWAHATI: An Indian Army soldier died in intensive Pakistani shelling on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, confirmed the Indian Army's 16 Corps on Wednesday night through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. This follows India's recent airstrikes against terror camps inside Pakistan and in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

In its release, the 16 Corps honored the martyred soldier. "GOC and all ranks of White Knight Corps pay homage to the ultimate sacrifice of Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of 5 Field Regiment, who made the supreme sacrifice on 07 May 25 while Pakistan Army shelling. We also stand in solidarity with all the victims of the indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians in the Poonch Sector," it stated.

Indian Army's attacks, named Operation Sindoor, struck nine terror camps run by Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.

These attacks were carried out in response to the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam when 26 persons were killed.

After Operation Sindoor, Pakistan launched unprovoked and intense shelling along the LoC and the International Border. Defence sources told India Today TV that a minimum of 15 Indians were killed and 43 others were injured in cross-border shelling in the Poonch and Tangdhar sectors.

The Indian Army retaliated with attacks, said to have caused considerable military damage to Pakistan Army posts in the Kupwara and Rajouri-Poonch sectors.

Violence also destroyed civilian property. President, District Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Narinder Singh, reported that a corner of the Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha was damaged when one of the Pakistani shells exploded. It broke the door and busted the window panes.

"Twelve civilians lost their lives due to cross-border shelling across various segments of the Poonch district," Singh informed.
