New Delhi: In a landmark digital transformation, India Post is set to complete the migration of all 1.65 lakh post offices to a modern IT platform by August 4, according to an official government statement released on Wednesday.

This large-scale transformation, part of the IT 2.0 framework, includes the introduction of real-time tracking and tracing of parcels, electronic proof of delivery, OTP-based authentication, digital payments, and integration with open APIs. The aim is to enable India Post to offer services on par with top private logistics providers.

One major innovation is the establishment of 344 dedicated delivery centres under Phase 1, which consolidate service areas for faster and more flexible deliveries. These centres will offer options such as Sunday and holiday delivery, and morning-evening delivery slots, aligning with industry standards and customer demands.

A key focus of the overhaul is India Post’s integration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Government e-Marketplace (GeM). These collaborations will allow wallet-based bookings, automated pricing, centralised order tracking, and smooth cash-on-delivery settlements via API-led dashboards.

Union Minister of State for Communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, who chaired a high-level operational review on Tuesday, said: “India Post's unmatched physical footprint must now be complemented by cutting-edge digital capabilities. This transformation is about scale, speed and service for every Indian—from the remotest village to the busiest city.”

To drive the initiative, India Post has formed a specialised data analytics team under IT 2.0 to boost efficiency through smart route planning, demand forecasting, and optimised sorting.

The move positions India Post not just as a mail carrier, but as a digital-age logistics engine aligned with India’s growing e-commerce economy.
