Guwahati: A third militant was gunned down by the security forces in Kreeri area of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Tuesday, effectively ending the operation.

Earlier on Monday night (August 17), two terrorists were shot dead and the operation was suspended.

Police officials said one of the three terrorists killed in the encounter was a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, who had murdered BJP leader Wasim Bari.

The militant that was shot dead today has been identified as Usman, a foreigner and a commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), police officials said.

It is to be noted that Usman was involved in the killing of BJP leader Wasim Bari, his father, and brother last month. He was the associate of one of the militant Sajad Haider, a Burhan Wani style terrorist who was held responsible for large scale civilian killings and attacks on Security Forces, apart from the radicalisation of local youth.

The three militants have been killed in the encounter that took place on Monday in the orchards area of Kreeri in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, the officials informed.

Two Army jawans, who were injured on Monday in the gunbattle, have also succumbed to the injuries.

The retaliation began after the LeT militants carried out the attack on a Naka party of the forces at Kreeri which left two CRPF jawans and a Special Police Officer (SPO) of Jammu and Kashmir policeman dead.

As soon as the attack started, the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. They chased the ultras and killed two of them including Sajad Haider -- a top commander of the LeT outfit in north Kashmir.

As per reports, two AK rifles and three pistols were recovered from the encounter site.
