BANGALORE: In response to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, the Karnataka government has issued a mask advisory to curb the spread of respiratory infections. Health officials have made it mandatory to wear masks in public spaces, especially in crowded areas, after confirming two HMPV cases in the state.

This advisory follows a rise in respiratory illnesses, with the state's health department urging precautionary measures to safeguard vulnerable groups, including senior citizens, those with comorbidities, pregnant women, and children.

Public health messages have been reinforced, advising people to practice good hygiene, avoid crowded places when feeling unwell, and seek medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or cold develop.

This step is part of a broader initiative to manage the spread of HMPV, which, while usually mild, can cause severe respiratory issues in some individuals.

The advisory has been positively received, with many showing support on social media platforms like X. The Karnataka government continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety.

Meanwhile, India reported three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) on Monday amid rising infections in China.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), two infants, aged eight months and three months, tested positive for the virus in Bengaluru, while a two-month-old child in Gujarat also contracted the infection.

All three children were hospitalized, with the three-month-old in Bengaluru later discharged. None of the cases had international travel history, although one child had recently visited Tirupati.
