
Guwahati: Kashmir, at present, is under cold wave as the mercury level of the state went down at most places last night. Among other places in Kashmir, Leh in the Ladakh region has experienced the coldest night of the winter so far.
The temperature level went down to minus 15.8 degrees Celsius on Friday night in Kashmir which is over three degrees down from minus 12.7 degrees Celsius the previous night. As stated by the MET officials, with such a sharp dip in the temperature level, Friday night was the coldest night of the season in the frontier town.
Apart from Leh, other places in the Kashmir division too experienced a coldest Friday night as the cold conditions tightened grip in the valley and Ladakh region. Notably, Kashmir, in these days is going through the second day of 'Chillai-Kalan' – which is a 40-day harshest period of winter and during these days, the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum.
On the other hand, Srinagar which is known as the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, too recorded a low of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius and this is a notch down from the previous night.
The MET officials also said that Qazigund - the gateway town to the valley based in south Kashmir also recorded a low of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius and the nearby Kokernag town reached at a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius.
Another region in Kashmir, Kupwara recorded minus 6.1 degrees Celsius and with this the region recorded the season's lowest night temperature there.
In Pahalgam, wherein there is one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, a low of minus 7.4 degrees Celsius was recorded on last night. Tourist attraction, Gulmarg in north Kashmir which is better known as a ski-resort, recorded the minimum temperature of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.
Moreover, the MET Office has also forecast that dry weather will prevail mainly in Kashmir till Wednesday.
