
GUWAHATI: Shivratri, a day dedicated to prayer, fasting, and meditation, is believed to be a holiday that, when observed with devotion and a pure heart, can bring prosperity and auspiciousness. On this day, devotees pray to Lord Shiva and perform rituals, such as uttering mantras, covering the Shiva Linga with milk, and consuming bhang, an Indian beverage that includes cannabis. This year, Maha Shivratri fells on February 18.

● Vermilion: After taking a bath, vermilion is applied to Shiva Lingam as a symbol of virtue.
● Shivling should be bathed with milk, water, and bel leaves as it is the most effective way to purify the soul.
● Different fruits donated during worship symbolize the fulfilment of wishes and long life. Burning incense sticks is a symbol of prosperity.
● Betel leaves: They represent the fulfilment of materialistic goals.
● Lightning in a lamp: This symbolizes gaining understanding and knowledge.
● Vibhuti: Made from dried cow dung, vibhuti, often referred to as bhasm, is a sacred ash.
● Flowers, rose water, yoghurt, ghee, honey, sugar, water, and sandalwood are among the additional offerings during the puja.
