MUMBAI: The next Chief Minister of Maharashtra will be named on the eve of the Mahayuti government's swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, December 4, a senior BJP official was quoted as saying on Monday.

The official stated that the decision will be made following the election of the Bharatiya Janata Party's legislature party leader.

On Monday, the saffron party designated former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as central observers for its Maharashtra legislature party meeting, where the MLAs would choose their leader.

The senior party functionary told the media, "Rupani and Sitharaman would meet the BJP's elected representatives in Mumbai on Wednesday (December 4). Following this meeting, the chosen candidate's name will be relayed to senior leaders in Delhi. These observers will then announce the elected leader of the BJP, who is set to be the next chief minister."

Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the state BJP president, had previously declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be present at the Mahayuti government's oath-taking ceremony on December 5 at Azad Maidan.
