Man who took 20 kids hostage shot dead; wife of accused dies after neighbors attack her

NEW DELHI: Twenty children, aged between 6 months and 15 years, were rescued when a man took them hostage after inviting them for a birthday party at his house in a small village at Farrukhabad in UP.

Subash Batham, the accused was shot dead during the rescue operation. Police said he was killed on January 30 night. The ordeal lasted for almost nine hours and was shown live on television channels.

During the rescue operation, Batham released a 6-month-old girl by handing her over to his neighbor from a balcony after some initial negotiations. Uttar Pradesh DGP O.P Singh said the suspect Batham had engaged in discussion with the police and administration "advantageously" but he terrorized to "blow up" the place many times . "And when we felt he was getting impulsive, the police team determined to attack. UP police team tried to go in, but he fired on them and in exchange fire by the police team Subash Batham was killed," said Singh, according to reports.

Batham was a murder accused out on bail. The motive of the accused was not known instantly.

The wife of the suspect was attacked by angry villagers when she attempted to run away from the spot. IG Mohit Agarwal said when the woman was sent to the hospital she was injured and was bleeding from her head. She succumbed to her injuries later.

CM Yogi Adityanath announced an award of Rs 10 lakh for the UP Police team that successfully executed the rescue operation.

"It is laudable to get all the children held hostage in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, safe with the efficient strategy and planning by the police. Congratulations to Chief Minister @myogiadityanath and the Uttar Pradesh Police for this", tweeted Home Minister Amit Shah.
