Mixed findings on Alok Verma hints at the need for more investigations in some matters

Guwahati: The mixed findings found against the ousted CBI director Alok Verma have created quite a confusion now as the supreme court, after examining the report, have indicated that some findings have hinted at the need for further investigations. Notably, the Central Vigilance Commission had submitted the report to the top court as per an order for investigation.

Speaking on the findings, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that it “can be categorised in four; very complimentary on some charges; not so on others; very uncomplimentary on some charges and some charges require further investigation.”

The SC further asks Alok Verma to file his response to these findings by Monday. As this is necessary to seek his response “keeping in mind the need to preserve and maintain the sanctity and public confidence in the said institution (CBI),” says Ranjan Gogoi.

Further, the copies of the enquiry report will also be sent to two top law officers of the government, namely, Attorney General VV Venugopal and Solicitor General Tushar Mehra. CJI Gogoi added, “Needless to say the reports directed to be furnished to the office of AG and SG will be treated with utmost confidentiality.”

This needs to be mentioned here that the Supreme Court had ordered for an investigation to probe corruption charges against the exiled CBI director. It had vested the investigation responsibilities on the CVC under the supervision of retired Supreme Court judge AK Patnaik. A total timeline of two weeks was allotted for the submission of the report. However, the CVC submitted the report a day late on November 16.

The court had also issued notices to the Centre, CBI, CVC, special CBI director Rakesh Asthana and Rao and had asked them to respond by November 12.
