Mumbai: Ferry Capsizes Near Gateway of India, 20 Rescued; Search Operations Underway

MUMBAI: A boat carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves capsized at sea in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon. Preliminary reports suggest that the ferry, named Neelkamal, was en route to Elephanta when it sank, carrying around 30 to 35 passengers. Nearby boats swiftly responded to help rescue the individuals on board.

Relief and rescue operations are in progress, with the Navy, JNPT, Coast Guard, three boats from the Yellow Gate Police Station, and local fishermen participating in the efforts. No casualties have been reported so far. The incident occurred around 4 pm on Wednesday, and further updates will be shared. Public ferries typically operate from the Gateway of India, located east of the monument, to the Elephanta Caves.

The incident took place closer to Elephanta Island, and passengers are being safely returned to the Gateway of India.The cause of the boat's capsizing is still unknown. Approximately 21 people have been rescued, and the operation is ongoing.

The Coast Guard stated, "A ferry with approximately 60 people sank off the coast of Mumbai. 20 survivors have been rescued so far and are on board Indian Coast Guard ship Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. One dead body has also been recovered while search operations are being carried out by ICG ships. More details are being ascertained."

Mumbai Police reported that the ferry boat 'Neelkamal' capsized near Uran, Karanja, with approximately 30-35 passengers onboard.

The police stated that rescue operations are ongoing with the assistance of the Navy, Coast Guard, Yellowgate Police Station, and local fishing boats. Further information is awaited.
