NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reference to Manipur came after the Opposition walked out of the Lok Sabha after about one-and-a-half hours of the PM’s speech.

Earlier, he launched a tirade against the Opposition parties, before giving reassurance to the people of Manipur that peace shall return soon, as his government is doing everything possible to punish the accused. “I want to assure the people of Manipur that the country is with them and peace shall return soon,” the PM said.

Acrimonious exchanges were witnessed on the floor of the Lok Sabha between the Opposition INDIA bloc and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance today, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi started delivering his reply to the no-confidence motion brought against his government. He stuck to the oft- repeated script of blaming the Congress for every evil.

PM Modi, in his reply to the INDIA bloc, had this prediction for them: “When you (Opposition) bring the no-confidence motion again in 2028, India will be the 3rd largest economy.”

Earlier in the day’s session, a notable verbal exchange took place in the Lok Sabha, as senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury termed the violence in Manipur as a civil war in the country, while questioning the PM’s silence over the matter. Replying to him, BJP MP Jyotiraditya Scindia sought to remind the House of the countless clashes and deaths that happened in the northeastern state during the Congress’s rule.

In a no-holds-barred attack on the ruling government earlier, TMC MP Mahua Moitra labelled the ongoing violence in Manipur as the BJP’s “biggest failure”. Moitra reiterated that the aim of the Opposition’s No-Confidence motion was meant to end the Centre’s “code of silence in Manipur”.

Prime Minister Modi, in reply to the no-confidence motion brought by the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, said: “I had said in 2018 that the no-confidence motion is not our floor test, but that of the opposition. When elections were held a year later, opposition could not muster votes that it had. Even the people expressed their no-confidence for Opposition.”

PM Modi, hit out at the Opposition in his reply to the no-confidence motion, saying that the Opposition has proved party is above nation for them. He said: “Today, data is known as second oil. A serious discussion was needed. But politics was priority for you. Several Bills were related to the poor, backwards, Dalits. But Opposition had no interest in it. The opposition betrayed the people.”

PM Modi also took a swipe at the Opposition, when said: “The country is listening to you very carefully. You have always left the country disappointed.”

Moreover, he said the Opposition couldn't prepare for the debate on no-confidence motion in spite of so much time in hand, leaving even its sympathisers disappointed.

The Prime Minister also gave examples of the achievements made by his government saying they had given a scam-free government to the youth of India, that they have given them “courage and opportunity to fly high in open sky.”

Highlighting the achievements of his government Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the glory of India was restored on the global stage. But that some people wanted to defame the country. He said the world sees, but Opposition refuses to acknowledge India's development.

On development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Under the Congress’s rule, Indian economy used to be languishing at the 10th or 11th spot. After 2014, it is among the top 5 economies. When you (Opposition) bring the no-confidence motion again in 2028, India will be the 3rd largest economy.”
