Pothorughat memorial is an example of commul unity'

MANGALDAI, January 30: “It is the humble duty of every citizen of our country to honour the supreme sacrifice offered by the 140 peasants martyrs while raising their voice against the British rulers in a non-violent way at the historic Pothorughat in Darrang district on January 28, 1894 and to follow  the path of unity and selfless dedication for the tion shown by them,” said Commanding Officer of the Army camp at Chapai, Mangaldai, Colonel Pijush De while paying floral tribute in memory of the Krishak Swahids on Saturday.

He also described the Pothorughat memorial as a special place in the history of India and said that it was a glittering example of commul unity and the spirit of patriotism.  The Red Horn Division of Indian Army has been celebrating the Krishak Swahid Divas every year at Pothorughat since 2000 in full military style and honour. This year Krishak Swahid Divas was celebrated by the army on January 30 synchronizing with the countrywide celebration of Swahid Divas to commemorate the assassition of Father of the tion.   The people of the locality along with the dignitaries showed their reverence for the martyrs while the Army Guard of Honour conducted the ceremony with full military honours.

The students of Deomori BEd College and JNV School, Darrang at Kalaigaon also presented a cultural programme on the solemn occasion. Singer Pranjal Sarma enthralled the audience with the performance of Ramdhun, and a self composed song on the sacrifice of Krishak Swahids. Swati Rai, a Class IX student of JNV, Hazaribagh who is on migration to JNV, Darrang offered a thought provoking speech on this historic event.  Additiol Deputy Commissioner of Darrang Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati of Darrang and other civil dignitaries, including media persons also attended the function.
