NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially entered the Indian parliament on Thursday when she was sworn in as a Wayanad MP in the Lok Sabha. After winning a landslide victory in the recently concluded Wayanad by-election, Priyanka joined her brother, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
With a landslide victory of more than four lakh votes, Priyanka Gandhi surpassed her brother's margin in the general elections of 2024 to win the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.
The 52-year-old Congress General Secretary had a great electoral debut as she defeated Sathyan Mokeri, the candidate of the CPI(M)-led LDF, with over six lakh votes.
Rahul Gandhi was present when Wayanad Congress leaders offered Priyanka Gandhi the election certificate in New Delhi on Wednesday. Rahul was spotted handing his sister sweets as a way to celebrate the occasion.
"I am deeply moved by the overwhelming support and trust shown by the people of Wayanad," Priyanka Gandhi said in her expression of gratitude. “I pledge to put in endless effort for the advancement and well-being of this lovely constituency," she added. Additionally, she gave local Congress leaders credit for their tireless efforts throughout the election campaign.
In her discussions with the leaders of the Wayanad Congress, Priyanka concentrated on resolving regional concerns and formulating a plan of action for the constituency's overall development.
