Respite comes for Delhiites as the city gets its first smog tower to combat air pollution

Delhi’s first smog tower was installed at Lajpat Nagar central market on January 3. The 20 feet tall, first of its kind air purifier can remove up to 80% of the particulate matter and is fitted with exhaust fans to suck in polluted air “The running cost of the facility will be around Rs 30,000 which will be borne by the traders’ association of Lajpat Nagar. This tower will purify the air within a circumference area of up to 750 metres. Such initiatives are important to combat air pollution in Delhi, which has also become a pollution capital,” said Ashwani Marwah, general secretary Traders Association Lajpat Nagar, according to a report by Hindustan Times. Gautam Gambhir, BJP MP from East Delhi shared a picture of the tower on his twitter account. The tweet read, " My Name is Gautam Gambhir. I don’t believe in talking, I believe in changing lives! Thank Hon’ble HM @AmitShah Ji for continuous support." The Supreme Court in December 2019 gave three months to the Centre and the Delhi government to set up a ‘smog tower’ pilot project to address the menace of air pollution.
