KOLKATA: Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, has been found guilty by Kolkata’s Sealdah Court in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The conviction relates to the brutal assault and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024.

The conviction was based on solid forensic evidence, including DNA matches that clearly connected Roy to the crime scene.

During the hearing, the victim's father expressed his emotions, saying, "You have given due importance to the faith I reposed in you," as he broke down following the announcement of the verdict.

Meanwhile, the accused, Sanjay Roy, has claimed innocence, alleging he was "framed" in the case.

Roy has been charged under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (causing death or persistent vegetative state), and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

The sentencing is scheduled for Monday, with widespread calls for the death penalty.

The case has sparked demands from the medical community and the public for a thorough investigation to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.

While Roy’s conviction is a significant step toward justice, the case has raised questions about the investigation’s thoroughness and potential cover-ups, leaving some concerns unresolved.

Meanwhile, Roy was initially arrested by the Kolkata Police just a day after the body of the victim doctor was recovered from a seminar hall of R.G. Kar premises in the morning of August 2024.

Although the CBI arrested the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar Sandip Ghosh and the former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal on charges of tampering and altering the evidence, both were granted "default bail" later by the same special court since the CBI failed to file supplementary charge sheet against them within 90 days from the date of their arrest. The process of framing charges against Roy at the special court was completed on November 4, 2024, and, henceforth, the trial process started on November 11.
