KOLKATA: A Kolkata court has imposed life imprisonment to Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a 34-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on Roy. Justice Anirban Das ruled that the case did not meet the criteria for the death penalty, stating it was not among the "rarest of the rare" cases.

The court also directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs 17 lakh to the parents of the victim, who, sitting in the courtroom, said they wanted justice rather than compensation.

Roy was convicted of rape and murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Throughout the trial, he claimed that he was falsely framed and never committed the crime. He argued that if he were guilty, a rudraksha mala he wore would have broken. The judge replied that he had taken the decision based on the evidence produced before him and listened to Roy's defense for three hours.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who had taken over the case from Kolkata Police, had sought the death penalty, calling this crime the "rarest of rare" case. However, the judge asked the CBI to present the guidelines of the Supreme Court regarding giving the death penalty.

After the judgment, the Sealdah court premises were heavily secured to avoid any kind of disturbance since protests erupted there. The parents of the victim were not satisfied with the investigation done by the CBI. They claimed that other culprits are still roaming free. The incident happened when the girl was working at night. It had sparked a countrywide protest for better safety o doctors.
