NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, citing medical grounds. The court has directed that Asaram must not meet his followers during the period of his release.
Asaram, who has been serving multiple life sentences for rape convictions, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018 for the rape of a minor and handed another life sentence in 2023 for a separate minor rape case.
Arrested in 2013, Asaram has spent most of the past decade in jail. Despite his convictions, he maintains a vast following and operates dozens of ashrams across India.
The interim bail, valid until March 31, was granted strictly for medical purposes. The court emphasized that Asaram is prohibited from engaging with his followers during this time. The order follows his recent return to Rajasthan's Jodhpur jail after a 17-day parole.
Meanwhile, earlier last week, a 13-year-old girl was allegedly molested by her young tutor on New Year's Eve. The girl's family has filed a formal complaint against the tutor, accusing him of sexual misconduct.
The incident took place at Saptah Shahid Path located in Guwahati's Dispur area.
The Dispur Police Station has registered a case under number 1381/24, charging the tutor under sections 126(2), 75(2), and 76 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
