Tamil Nadu: Forest Officials Issues Hunting Order For Wild Tiger, Says Capturing It Top Priority

The wild male tiger has reportedly been preying on livestock since July and has killed 2 persons in the last month.

Chennai: A hunting order has been issued by the topmost official of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department for a tiger that has reportedly killed 2 persons and has been preying on livestock in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR).

The wild male adult tiger is being referred to as MDT 23 and preparations are on to capture this tiger by a multi-disciplinary team of experts and forest officials. The 'hunting order' that was issued will be fulfilled by adhering to Section 11 (1) (a) of India's Wildlife Protection Actb1972.

The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has reported that the tiger has been preying on livestock in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and nearby areas since July. The tiger has also allegedly killed two persons, one on September 24 and the other on Friday. The forest department is putting in all efforts to capture and tranquillize the tiger.

However, all efforts to capture the tiger have been in vain so far due to multiple factors that have been favouring the tiger - terrain, inclement weather and disturbances by the local population. Notably, the tiger has not consumed any human that he happened to kill.

As per the order, the operation will be photographed, videographed and documented.

After being captured, the tiger would be sent for a medical examination so that top veterinarians can decide if the tiger should be shifted to a zoo or to some other place as per the requirements.
