Tamil Nadu man sets himself on fire after cops seize bike amid lockdown

Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a 27-year-old man from Ambur in Tamil Nadu set himself on fire after police seized his vehicle, allegedly for violating the lockdown norms. The man is now being treated for his burn injuries at the Christian Medical College hospital in Vellore. According to reports, the 5 officers responsible for seizing his bike have been booked, and an investigation is underway.

The man in question is Mugilan, a resident of Anna Nagar in Ambur, who lives his wife and three children. According to reports, the man went out on the national highway on Sunday. However, he was stopped by the cops as the Tamil Nadu Government has clamped a complete lockdown on.

When the cops questioned Mugilan why he was outside, Mugilan was not able to answer in a satisfactory manner and the police seized his vehicle, which was parked at a school near the spot where the vehicle check took place.

When Mugilan requested the cops to return his bike, they allegedly refused. This aggrieved the man to such an extent that he dashed to his home and returned with a can of kerosene which he used to set himself on fire.

The shell shocked policemen used him to the local Government hospital, which referred him to the Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore where he is currently undergoing treatment. He was shifted to the ICU in the morning where he is receiving treatment.

Tirupattur SP Vijayakumar has said that the Government has withdrawn the services of the five policemen who were on duty at that time from Ambur town police station and they have been shifted to Tirupattur town police station. A DSP from the district headquarters has been tasked with conducting a probe into the incident. An FIR has also been registered against the five policemen. CCTV footage from a location near the incident is also being scanned.
