Tibetans put off two global meets due to coronavirus epidemic

The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) here on Thursday postponed two international summits due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, the official program to mark the 57th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day on March 10, the day Chinese troops suppressed the Tibetan uprising in Lhasa in 1959 forcing the Dalai Lama and over 80,000 Tibetans into exile in India and other countries, would be organized but at a low-key. The postponed programmes were the Global Summit of International Associations — scheduled in July, and the Global Summit of the International Tibetan Associations on April 2-4, said CTA Information Secretary T.G Arya. The summit, first such gathering of its kind, was being convened to discuss core issues related to preserving the Tibetan culture, sustaining the Tibetan freedom struggle, reinforcing Tibetan associations and organisations, and strengthening the CTA’s ties with the Tibetan communities residing outside South Asia. The CTA’s 5/50 program will take place as planned in August. (IANS)
