CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi walked out of the state Legislative Assembly on Monday, saying that there was a violation of constitutional protocol after the session began without the National Anthem being played.

The Governor reminded the Assembly of its constitutional duty to sing the National Anthem and asked Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to ensure that the practice was followed. But only the Thamizh Thai Vazhthu, the state song, was sung.

A statement from Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan stressed the constitutional importance of respecting the National Anthem, noting that it is a fundamental duty under the Constitution. The statement also pointed out that it is customary for the National Anthem to be sung at the beginning of the Governor’s address, both in Parliament and in state legislatures. The Governor expressed his anguish over the Assembly’s refusal to comply and left the session in protest.

This is not the first time the disagreements of such a nature happened. In February 2024, Governor Ravi had walked out of the Assembly as references to the Dravidian Model of Governance in his speech were dropped. This is not the first time in recent years, as several conflicts have occurred in the past and are still making relations between the two sides strained.

The tension between the TN Governor and CM Stalin continues to fuel political controversy, with the National Anthem issue marking another chapter in the strained relationship, leaving citizens awaiting resolution.
