UIDAI Deactivates Over 1.7Crore Aadhar Numbers of Deceased Individuals

New Delhi: In a major step towards enhancing integrity of it’s database and prevent identity misuse , the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers that belonged to deceased individuals. According to a official statement , UIDAI has launched a new feature titled “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” on the myAadhaar portal, allowing family members to to report a death and request deactivation of the deceased’s Aadhaar number. This service is currently available in 24 states and Union Territories. The move is aimed at streamlining the deactivation process and ensuring that Aadhaar is not misused as proof of identity after a persons death. 

“To maintain the continued accuracy of the Aadhar database, UIDAI has proactively taken measures to obtain death records from various sources and deactivate Aadhaar numbers after due validation,” the statement added. The initiative is seen as a significant step towards data hygiene and safeguarding personal identification systems from fraudulent use.
