NEW DELHI: In a move aimed at providing greater financial relief to beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme, the government has decided to raise the subsidy provided for cooking gas cylinders to Rs 300 per cylinder, as confirmed by Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday.

Currently, Ujjwala beneficiaries purchase 14.2-kg cylinders at a subsidized rate of Rs 703, which is below the market price of Rs 903. Following the decision of the Union Cabinet, the beneficiaries will now pay only Rs 603 per cylinder, significantly reducing their financial burden.

The Ujjwala scheme, launched with the goal of providing clean cooking fuel to economically disadvantaged women in rural India, has garnered widespread acclaim for its positive impact. This subsidy increase is expected to further enhance the accessibility and affordability of cooking gas for Ujjwala beneficiaries, contributing to their well-being and comfort.

Earlier towards the end of August this year, the Union Cabinet approved a reduction in the price of LPG gas cylinders by Rs 200 for all connection holders. In addition to this, the Cabinet also cleared the proposal to give 75 lakh new LPG cylinder connections under the Ujjwala scheme, thus taking the total beneficiaries to more than 10 crore across the country, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told media persons after the Cabinet briefing.

In this context, prior to this development, Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been reporting heavy under recoveries due to a lack of hikes in the prices of domestic cooking gas. Under the Ujjwala scheme, the government provided free LPG connections to women beneficiaries in rural households. The beneficiaries already get a Rs 200 subsidy, and now there will be a further Rs 200 cut for all domestic LPG connection holders, Thakur said.

He further informed me that the new connections are being given to those beneficiaries who have been added owing to the marriage of girls and the issuance of new ration cards.
