New Delhi: Veteran BJP leader and former deputy prime minister Lal Krishna Advani, 96, has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Saturday for medical observation. His status is stable, according to hospital sources.

Dr. Vinit Suri, a senior consultant in the neurology department, is treating Advani, who was taken to the hospital two days ago. This is his third hospitalisation of the year and his second stay in the facility.

Similar reasons led to Advani's hospital admission earlier in August 2024. In the first week of July, he was also admitted to the hospital and held under observation for a few days before being released. Additionally, early this year, Advani was admitted for a brief stay at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

From 2002 to 2004, Advani was the deputy prime minister of the NDA administration, which was headed by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In March of this year, President Droupadi Murmu also awarded him the Bharat Ratna.

Advani, who was born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi (now in Pakistan), became a swayamsevak in 1942 and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He went on to become the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), holding the position for three non-consecutive terms from 1986 to 1990, 1993 to 1998, and 2004 to 2005. This made him the longest-serving president in the history of the party.
