World Environment Day (June 5) was established in 1972 by the United Nations (UN) at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment followed by the first celebration to mark the day in 1974 in the US with the theme – only one Earth.
The world's first environmental conference was held here, in which 119 countries participated.
On the first Environment Day, former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi expressed her concerns about the nature and environment of India.
The purpose of World Environment Day was to make citizens around the world aware of the concerns of environmental pollution and to make them aware of nature and the environment.
Every year a theme is kept for World Environment Day and this year's theme is 'Only One Earth - Living Sustainable in Harmony with Nature.
According to the report of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the world population is continuously increasing to 8 billion, and we are using 1.6 Earth equivalent to maintain our current lifestyle.
Naturally, the ecosystem cannot meet our demands and as a result, is rapidly deteriorating.
Now more than ever, we need to remember that we only have one Earth and time is running out to save our planet which is why the theme of this year's World Environment Day - 'Only One Earth' - fits perfectly with the current scenario.
