12 Crore Tap Water Connections Made Through Jal Jeevan Mission

NEW DELHI: Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) reached a new milestone by providing safe and clean drinking water through taps to more than 12 crore rural homes across the nation as part of Azadi ka Amrit Kaal.

Only 3.23 Crore (16.64%) of village houses had access to a piped water connection when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the inauguration of JJM from the Red Fort ramparts on August 15, 2019.

As of right now, five states—Goa, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat, and Punjab—as well as three UTs—Puducherry, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andaman and Nicobar Islands—have reported 100% coverage.

Himachal Pradesh is likewise on track to reach saturation in the near future, with a 98.35 percent rate, followed by Bihar at 96.05 percent.

Goa, Haryana, Punjab, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu are "Har Ghar Jal certified States/UTs," which means that in these states/UTs, the villagers have confirmed through Gramme Sabhas that "all households and public institutions" in the village are getting an adequate, safe, and consistent supply of water.

In addition, tap water is now available in 9.06 lakh (88.55%) schools and 9.39 lakh (84%) anganwadi facilities across the nation thanks to the union and state governments' unrelenting efforts.

For the rural people, JJM is having a big socioeconomic impact.

Regular access to tap water relieves people, particularly women and young girls, from having to carry heavy bucket loads of water to satisfy their daily household needs, which lessens the tedium of the past.

The time that has been spared can be put to good use by supporting children's education, learning new skills, and activities that generate cash.

All habitations affected by arsenic/fluoride now have access to safe drinking water, according to the states/UTs.

By providing safe water through taps to every household, school, anganwadi, and other public institution in rural areas, Jal Jeevan Mission is moving towards achieving the SDG 6, which is to provide safe and affordable water to all, while adhering to the motto of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas.
