Chennai: A gang of robbers waylaid and hijacked a container truck that was carrying mobile phones in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The DHL container truck was on its way with around 14,000 mobile phones worth Rs.15 crores from the Redmi manufacturing unit in Chennai to Mumbai.

According to the police, the gang was following the truck on a car and waylaid it at Melumalai near Soolagiri on Chennai- Bengaluru National Highway around 2 am. The exact number of people involved in the heist is yet to be ascertained.

The gang then attacked the driver and cleaner of the truck and tied them up and left them on the road and fled with the loot.

The driver and cleaner informed the police at Soolagiri station after they managed to free themselves with the help of the public.

Based on their information, the police carried out a search operation and found the truck abandoned in Azaghumalai, more than 10km from where the robbery took place, with the consignment missing.
