2 Lashkar Militants Killed in Baramulla During Encounter with Security Forces

SRINAGAR: Indian security forces gunned down two members of the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba in the Baramulla district of Kashmir on Thursday. This is the second such encounter in the past 24 hours.

“Both have been identified as Shakir Majid Najar and Hanan Ahmad Seh from the Shopian district. Both joined militancy in the month of March 2023. Further Investigation going on,” mentioned Vijay Kumar, the Additional Director General of Police Kashmir.

Taking actions based on intelligence reports about the presence of militants in the Wanigam Payeen Kreeri area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir, the security forces launched an operation in the early hours of Thursday morning. The militants reportedly opened fire at the security forces during the operation, forcing them to retaliate. The militants were killed during the exchange of fire, according to the statement issued by the police.

On Wednesday, two additional militants were killed in a separate encounter when the security forces foiled an attempt to infiltrate the borders near the Line of Control in the Machil sector of the Kupwara district of Kashmir. Thus making the encounter on Thursday the second one within 24 hours.

These incidents are considered a significant risk to the security of the region, especially when the state is planning to host a G20 meeting later in the month. Security is being tightened across the region after the recent incident. Apart from the increased presence of the security forces, the National Investigating Agency also carried out search operations in four different localities of the Baramulla district to find evidence of the presence of more militants in the area. These operations were also carried out in the morning of Thursday.

More details are awaited on the development as the search operations continue in different parts of the Kashmir valley.
