NEW DELHI: Former cricketer Dinesh Mongia has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only days before the Punjab Legislative Assembly elections.

During a meeting in the national capital, Mongia was accepted into the BJP in the presence of senior party leaders. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, claimed that numerous prominent people have joined the party before of today's vital Punjab elections.

"This demonstrates how the BJP is gaining traction in Punjab," all of the opposition parties said. Shekhawat remarked, "Captain Amarinder Singh and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa have announced an alliance with us."

According to a list released by the BJP, eight persons joined the party today. Among those named are current Congress MLAs Fateh Singh Bajwa and Balwainder Singh Laddi, state-wide Christian leader Kamal Bakshi, retired Punjab and Haryana High Court advocate Madhumeet, corporator Jagdeep Singh Dhaliwal, ex-SAD MLA Gurtej Singh Gudhiyana, and former Sangroor MP and United Akali Dal leader Rajdev Singh Khalsa.

According to Shekhawat, Gurtej Singh Gudhiyana has served in the legislature three times. "He is a first-generation Akalis," says the narrator. The preacher stated, "They've all joined us."

Mongia, a 44-year-old left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, was born on April 17, 1977, in Chandigarh. He made his debut for the Punjab cricket team in 1995-96.

Mongia has played in 57 One Day Internationals and one Twenty20 International match for India. 

"By joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, I want to serve the people of Punjab," Mongia said after being accepted into the party. There is no other political party now that can work more for the country's development than the BJP."
