Air India Crew Accidentally Serves Non-Veg Meal To Vegetarian Passenger; Airline Takes Action

New Delhi: Air India has grounded two members of the cabin crew for mistakenly serving a non - vegetarian meal to a vegetarian passenger on a Tokyo - Delhi flight on March 25.

Government officials informed that the passenger had pre-booked a vegetarian meal for himself.

A video shows the passenger, who had reserved a Jain veg meal, speaking to two crew members of the airline. The crew said that they provided him the non-veg meal by mistake and assured the passenger that it was not done intentionally.

The passenger shot a video of the interaction and posted it on social media.

Although the traveler accepted their reasoning, he pinpointed that the crew members had taken the issue casually and added that they did not properly check the meal before serving.

The officials said that the passenger lodged a complaint with the crew members after realizing that he had received the wrong meal.

"You did not care about my religious feelings and gave me non-veg despite me being a Jain and a vegetarian," the passenger told the crew members.

"An issue of a non-veg meal alleged to have been served to a passenger onboard AI307 (Tokyo Narita-Delhi) of March 25 was raised on a social media platform. The crew concerned were immediately barred from flying duties and an inquiry has been initiated. AI has zero tolerance towards any kind of lapse in service, even if it is inadvertent," an Air India spokersperson said.

The airline said that among the 80 passengers, 11 special meals were served as requested at the time of booking. As per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of Air India, special meals are kept in separate ovens to avoid the possibility of getting mixed up.

The airline further went on to say that the meals are labelled by the caterer and the same cannot be opened and checked before serving as this will be equivalent to tampering with pre-packed meals.
