All India Radio Transmitter To Be Shut Down After December 31

NEW DELHI: The national public radio broadcaster of India, AIR (All India Radio) will not be available anymore after 31 December this year as it will be closed completely.

According to various reports, the rate of transmitters that makes availability of AM services has now been increased which has lead to the decision of shutting down six transmitters.

This year will be the last year that people across the country can enjoy services from All India Radio as from onwards the programmes from AIR will run under a FM channel and also in mobile application.

With this development of AIR, thousands of radio listeners will be deprived of listening to the services as the FM (frequency modulation) reaches around 40-50 kilometer area while in case of the service by AM (amplitude modulation) in the medium wave is at present delivering services in around 200 kilometer area.

All India Radio has been serving with its programmes to a large geographical area since 73 years but now as it will be shut down and the progammes will be running in mobile app and FM radio, its services will now get limited only to certain areas.

A large number of people in rural areas do not have access to smartphones so that they can listen to programmes in mobile or FM therefore this change seems to cut off services for many mainly those residing in the rural areas.

The programmes 'Mann Ki Baat' which is a programme of Prime Narendra Modi is aired on All India Radio and this show attracts a lot of people from rural areas therefore the disconnection of AM services and serving programme through FM will affect people to a great extent as FM network cannot reach such locations.

AIR (All India Radio) is considered as one of the largest broadcasting organizations among all across the world in view of the number of languages broadcast along with the spread of socio-economic and cultural diversity that is served by the radio station. All India Radio is the largest radio network worldwide.

All India Radio is officially known as Akashvani since the year 1957. The home service by AIR consists of 420 stations that are located in various parts of India and these stations reaches 99 percent of the total population in the country and nearly 92 percent of its area.
