Amritpal Singh Apprehended by Punjab Police After a Major Car Chase

CHANDIGARH: The state of Punjab is in a tense condition since the morning of Saturday when the Punjab Police started an operation towards the arrest of one Amritpal Singh. Latest reports suggest that he was successfully apprehended after a high-speed chase that involved a large number of police vehicles.

Amritpal Singh, a radical preacher and head of the “Waris Punjab De” cult has been the cause of headache for the Punjab Police since the morning of Saturday. He has emerged as the major challenge for the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government in the state of Punjab. The public had elected the Aam Aadmi Party to power by a huge mandate in the previous state elections. Amritpal Singh has been attacking Bhagwant Mann and his party with several mentions of the public electing him as there was no other option.

Several unconfirmed videos made rounds on social media several police vehicles chasing a vehicle with Amritpal Singh on board. Six men who were supposed to be close aides of the suspect had been arrested by the police before bringing him in.

Waris Punjab De is a separatist Khalistani pressure group in Punjab which was founded by actor-activist Deep Sidhu. Amritpal Singh assumed control of the group soon after his death in a road accident last year. But the family of the original founder had distanced themselves from the cult mentioning that none of them had nominated Amritpal Singh as the successor.

Amidst fears of a backlash from the supporters and followers of the cult regarding the arrest of the controversial leader Amritpal Singh, the Punjab Police has ordered a suspension of mobile internet services and SMS services in the state till 12 PM on Sunday. A senior official of the Home Affairs Department of Punjab announced this development.

He had earlier issued a threat to Union Home Minister Amit Shah mentioning that he will meet the same fate as the late Indira Gandhi.
