Anil Deshmukh Arrested by ED in Money Laundering Case

NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested former Home Minister of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh after continuous 12 hours of questioning at the ED office related to money laundering and other corruption charges against him.

Anil Deshmukh was arrested on 1 November, Monday night at around 1:30 AM. The ED official then told sources that Deshmukh, 71, was arrested as per the provisions of PMLA the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

After the ED probed into corruption, officials claim that Anil Deshmukh, the senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party at the time questioning tried to avoid and escape. Further, on Tuesday, 2 November they will present Deshmukh in front of a local court and soon seek his custody.

The politician along with his lawyer came to the ED office around 11:40 AM in the Ballard Estate Area of South Mumbai. Earlier Deshmukh has skipped five notices from ED and had to appear before the agency as last week the Bombay High Court denied to cancel the summonses of ED against him.

The money laundering case against NCP leader Deshmukh arises after the CBI registered money laundering case, Money laundering crime, Anil Deshmukh arrested, Anil Deshmukh, Anil Deshmukh ED probe, Anil Deshmukh ED summons, Anil Deshmukh money laundering case, Anil Deshmukh money laundering arrest in a case of corruption in connection to allegations made by Param Bir Singh, former commissioner of Mumbai Police of taking bribe of at least Rupees 100 crore. The questioning session by ED officials on Deshmuk went for a long time with a recording of all the statements. According to the ED officials, Deshmukh is the key person related to this case and needed to answer on various matters that also include the opening by Sachin Waze at the time of questioning by ED. Sachin Waze is a suspended Police Officer from Mumbai related to the corruption case.

Before presenting himself to the office of ED, Deshmukh had shared a message through video recording by mentioning about media's claim over him of not cooperating with ED officials and says that he went to the CBI office twice after being summoned and his petitions are still pending in the Supreme Court but as it will take time, therefore, he himself is deposing to the ED office. He further added that he and his family cooperated with ED without any interruption earlier in June when ED raided their home. He asked about the whereabouts of Param Bir Singh who made allegations against him regarding corruption cases of bribery.

ED made allegations to Deshmukh that when he was the home minister he had taken illegal indulgence of Rupees 4.7 crore approximately in cash from various orchestra bar owners through Waze but Deshmukh denied all the allegations.

Nawab Malik, a spokesperson from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said that the arrest of Deshmukh is encouraged politically and its purpose is to defame the image of the government leaders of the state's Maha Vikas Aghadi.
