Arvind Kejriwal Seeks Support of Telengana CM KCR Against Centre’s Ordinance

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met Telangana Chief Minister and BRS President K Chandrashekar Rao in Hyderabad to seek his support against the contentious ordinance promulgated by the Centre.

Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi CM, was accompanied by his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, AAP leaders Raghav Chadha, Sanjay Singh and other leaders. The meeting between the leaders started at 1 pm at Pragati Bhawan in Hyderabad.

Taking to his Twitter handle, the AAP leader on Friday posted his decision to seek Telangana chief minister KCR's support against the "unconstitutional and undemocratic Ordinance passed by the BJP government against the orders of the Supreme Court".

Arvind Kejriwal has embarked on a nationwide tour to gather support from like- minded opposition leaders to take a stand against the ordinance introduced by the Centre on the Delhi services matter, despite a directive to the contrary from the SC.

Along with other AAP leaders, Kejriwal is expected to request KCR to extend support to his party against the ‘unconstitutional and undemocratic’ ordinance. He is also to urge the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to oppose the Bill, which will be tabled by the Modi government in Parliament in place of the ordinance.

Kejriwal’s meeting with KCR is the latest in a series of meetings with various opposition parties in different states that the AAP leaders are pursuing.

Earlier, on May 22, Arvind Kejriwal met with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and garnered his support to gather around the opposition parties in a bid to counter the Centre's move. Kejriwal had also met West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who assured him that Trinamool Congress will oppose the bill when the Narendra Modi government presents it in Parliament.

Kejriwal, accompanied by Bhagwant Mann, had called on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar in Mumbai on May 25 to enlist his support. a separate meeting with Shiv Sena UBT leader Uddhav Thackeray was also attended by the AAP leaders.

Some time with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi was also sought by the AAP chief, to seek the Congress’ support in Parliament.

The thorn in Kejriwal’s side, the new Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, promulgated by the Narendra Modi government last Friday, will not only give the Delhi Lieutenant Governor final say in the transfer and postings of bureaucrats in the Delhi government, but also give him power to decide on the constitution of boards, commissions or “any” statutory body that emanates from a central Act.
