Murshidabad: An alleged smuggler was shot down by troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Murshidabad district of West Bengal on Sunday, June 5 during an encounter at the Indo-Bangla border.

The incident took place when the BSF personnel detected the movement of smugglers in the area.

As per the BSF statement, the smugglers attacked the jawans with sharp weapons when they were ordered to freeze their movement.

The statement said that the BSF troops initially tried to stop the smugglers by using non-lethal weapons but when they realized that it did not work out, one of the jawans, sensing danger, used his personal safety weapon out of compulsion and shot the smuggler.

The smuggler has been identified as Rohil Mandal and his body has been recovered. The officials informed that Rohil's body was handed over to the police.

Earlier last month, a heavy firing took place between forest personnel and timber smuggler at Hakunguri beat under Joypur range in Dehing Patali National Park in Dibrugarh.

According to reports, a forest patrolling party was patrolling in the area when they heard sounds of machines used for cutting trees. They reached the spot to verify but on seeing them, the timber smugglers fired at them and in reply they fired at the timber smugglers.
