CAA Will Be Implemented After COVID Vaccine Drive: Amit Shah

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday assured the West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will be implemented once the vaccination drive for the precautionary does is over.

The development comes after West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement the amended Citizenship Act (CAA) as soon as possible.

The government started administering booster doses of the vaccine in April and it is expected to be completed in nine months.

Adhikari who met Shah also discussed other issues related to the BJP's ongoing political battle with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal.

Reportedly, he has given a list of 100 TMC leaders against whom action should be taken for corruption.

CAA was passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, and notified the next day.

The central government is yet to frame the rules for the Act. However, there have been vocal demands from various regions including the North Eastern states.

Meanwhile, in May this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement over CAA in Bengal didn't land well in Guwahati as AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya asserted that protest against the latter has never ended and will never end.

Notably, Shah is in Bengal and during a public meeting in Siliguri in North Bengal, Shah accused Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of spreading rumours that the new citizenship law would not be enforced.

''I want to make it clear that the Trinamool Congress is spreading rumours that the CAA will not be implemented. I want to say that as soon as the COVID wave comes under control we will implement CAA on the ground,'' he said.
