Calcutta High Court Raps IIT Kharagpur in Faizan Ahmed Death Case

KOLKATA: The IIT Kharagpur Director has been asked to submit a report on the unnatural death of Assam boy, Faizan Ahmed. The High court referred to the case as one of 'ragging' and asked for the names involved in ragging. This was done after the High Court had heard the petition on the death of the 23 year old student.

The Court also ordered the Director of IIT Kharagpur to properly describe the steps taken by the management team and the wardens of the hostel after being informed about the ragging inside the college premises. Justice Rajasekhar Mantha said, " The court is interested to know about the steps taken by the wardens and the management of IIT Kharagpur.

After the information was received, it appeared to be a 'clear case of ragging', the court ruled. Faizan Ahmed, a third year mechanical student of IIT Kharagpur was found hanging in his hostel room on October 14th. Apart from the Institute management team, the Court has also rapped the police involved in the case for allegedly neglecting the evidence. Faizan's family claimed that their son was forced and pushed over the edge by ragging. The complaints were ignored by the college authority, it was said.

The Calcutta High Court stated that, if there's any kind of suppression of facts from the IIT Kharagpur authorities, the Additional SP should take necessary action. If this is not done by police department then the court will interrupt and take stern action against the management.

Faizan's family counsel mentioned that the deceased was isolated, and had complained, while the ones who supported him initially, withdrew their support later on. After acquiring the evidence, the High Court stated that it expects something very solid in the next hearing. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for 22nd November.

Faizan Ahmed originally hailed from Assam's Tinsukia District and his body was discovered in a partly decomposed state in his room at IIT- K on 14th October 2022. His death had been ruled 'unnatural' by the police.
